INTERN DIARIES: From Kenya to the United Nations: Growing, Learning and Making an Impact at the SDG Lounge
20 October 2024

When I first arrived in New York City from Kenya, I had no idea what to expect. Little did I know that my role in supporting the SDG Lounge during High-Level Week of the General Assembly as part of the UN Partnerships team would leave me with unforgettable memories.

The SDG Lounge wasn’t just another event; it was a melting pot of minds—leaders from all walks of life coming together with one purpose: to tackle today’s most pressing global challenges. What truly stood out was the emphasis on storytelling. The SDG Lounge wasn’t just about policies and statistics; it was about listening to voices that often go unheard—like those of people directly affected by climate change. Their stories deserved to be at the forefront, and the SDG Lounge captured that beautifully.

My role behind the scenes gave me a unique perspective. From late-night planning sessions to coordinating with speakers and participants, every moment was an opportunity to learn and contribute. And the networking! Being surrounded by brilliant individuals from across the globe was an incredible opportunity.  I met so many inspiring people— let’s just say, my LinkedIn has never been busier!

In short, the SDG Lounge was a transformative experience. The challenges were worth it, and the friendships I formed and lessons I learned were the true highlights. Here’s to more moments like this one!
