Stepping up for the SDGs: How UN Pension Fund Volunteers Made an Impact during High-Level Week
1 October 2024

When Ali Khurram, Training and Development Officer at the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF), heard that the United Nations Office for Partnerships was looking for volunteers to assist with logistics for the SDG Lounge during the UN General Assembly High-Level Week, he saw an opportunity to make a difference. Without hesitation, he rallied his colleagues in the Fund’s Business Support Section.

The response was remarkable. More than 35 staff members eagerly stepped forward, ready to dive into a fast-paced environment. What started as a logistical challenge quickly turned into a transformative experience for the volunteers, underscoring the power of collaboration and meaningful partnerships across the United Nations system.

A Commitment to Service

Coming from a customer service driven office, the volunteers were no strangers to delivering excellence, even under pressure. After a briefing by the UN Partnerships team, they adapted swiftly, taking on responsibilities that extended beyond logistics. They supported not only UN Partnerships but also the speakers and attendees who brought the SDG Lounge to life. For the volunteers, the assignment wasn’t just about executing tasks—it was about contributing to something far bigger: the progress of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each guest interaction,  every detail they handled, became  a testament to their commitment  to creating an inspiring and welcoming space.

A Rewarding Experience

One of the most fulfilling aspects of their role was engaging directly with guests. Providing seamless service and ensuring an exceptional experience was a challenge the team embraced wholeheartedly. Seeing the appreciation on the faces of attendees made their efforts all the more rewarding. “It was an incredible feeling to witness how the SDG Lounge brought people together, even during such a busy and demanding week,” one volunteer shared. “It reminded us why the UN continues to be a leader in uniting the world.”

 Looking Ahead

Eager to build on this year’s success, the volunteers have already expressed their interest in being involved earlier in the planning process for future events. They see this as a chance to leverage the insights and expertise of their colleagues, ensuring the SDG Lounge continues to make an impact.

UNJSPF’s Ongoing Commitment  to the SDGs

Behind the scenes, the work of the UNJSPF aligns closely with the mission of the SDGs. Established in 1948 by a resolution of the General Assembly, the Fund provides retirement, death, disability, and related benefits for UN staff and members of affiliated organizations. At the heart of its investment philosophy lies a commitment to driving positive real-world outcomes. The SDGs serve as a guiding framework for the Fund’s  approach to environmental,  social, and governance issues, shaping its investments and amplifying its impact.

As global challenges grow more complex, the UNJSPF’s dedication to sustainable development—and the efforts of its staff—shine as examples of how every action, big or small, can contribute to building a better future.
